Name: Morgan
Roberts Age: 27 Hometown: San
Francisco Personal Quote: If you didn't come
to dance, wtf did you come for?
Question: How long have you been spinning?
Answer: I've been spinning for nearly 10
years.
Question: What was the first party
or club you spun at? Answer: I started when I
first went to college. So the first few parties I played
were ones that my friends and I got together to throw.
They were also some of the most memorable parties. Even
after a year of practicing, I still was not very
comfortable playing in front of people.
Question: Where do you buy most of your
vinyl? Answer: Now adays I buy most of my
vinyl on-line, mainly www.bangingtunes.com I've been
working with Oz and Kristian for a long time now, and
I'm happy to support them in any way I can!
Question: How did you get your break?
Answer: I dunno if I really have yet had my
break. To be honest with you, it's been a lot of hard
work. Everything from throwing a few parties of my own,
learning that not what I wanted to do... and then
pushing CD's out to people in hopes of them actually
listening to them. If anything was my big break, it was
the opportunity I had to make a large number of CDR's
with semi-professional labels, long before anyone else
started to put out Mixed CD's (they were all doing Tapes
still).
Question: Do you think the scene
has progressed in forms of productions over the last
year? Answer: I think the scene has and will
continue to progress in the different styles. As they
are invented and re-invented, we will see new stuff and
revist old stuff. I personally like a bit of both.
Question: Do you have any plans of
setting up your own label? Answer: Yes, in
fact I already have... along with my partner Kemical
Kidd (www.kemicalkidd.com) we started "America's First
HardNRG Label", Lotek Records (www.lotekrecords.com)
Question: what has been the highlight of your
career so far? Answer: Playing in the UK, and
producing tracks with some of my favorite engineers.
Question: As a producer, how do you test
your new productions? Answer: In the past
I've been pressing up dubplates of original work... but
that's getting expensive and times are getting tight,
plus CDJ's are becoming widely available so I think it's
pretty much accepted that the best way to test out a new
production is to bring it along on CDR and see what the
crowd thinks!
Question: Whom do you rate
as the crème de la crème? Answer: As far as
DJ's in the genre I play, Tony De Vit, RR Fierce, Karim,
Superfast Oz, Andy Farley. As for producers in the
genre, OD404, Dynamic Intervention, Captain Tinrib, Jon
Doe, and BK.
Question: What tunes are you
currently playing that make the dance floors erupt?
Answer: Labels that tend to do the job,
Kaktai, Nukleuz, Tidy, Tripoli Trax... those are the
mainstream ones.
Question: Do you prefer
the studio or playing live? Answer: I think
I'd like to combine the both and eventaully get to a
live PA situation. But at the moment I do a lot more
DJing than I do studio work, so I'd have to go with
that. Tho I love creating new stuff, it takes a lot of
time, and motivation which is hard when you're loaded
down with other things.
Question: What plans do you have for your own
productions in the coming year? Answer: Right
now I've got hopes to get more releases out on Lotek, as
well as branching out to having a release on Kaktai and
another on DIP.
Question: What all time
classic line up would you love to witness if you were
out yourself? Answer: Pretty much the DJ's I
mentioned before: Tony De Vit, RR Fierce, Karim,
Superfast Oz, Andy Farley...
Question:
How long have you been DJing and what made you become a
DJ? Answer: I've been spinning for almost 10
years, and when I first started I never intended to be a
"DJ" as such. Instead it was just a way for me to bring
back home with me a little piece of the party. To enjoy
the music, and eventually try my hand at manipulating it
as well. It just kinda grew from there as I wanted to
allow other people to hear what I was enjoying. But it's
always come from that basic foundation of doing it for
myself.
Question: Do you think the scene
has changed since you started and in what ways?
Answer: Oh most definitely, but all things
change. If they didn't they would be lost to the past.
Afterall, this isn't our grandparents guitar based
rock'n'roll anymore, is it?!
Question: What makes your style different from
other peoples? Answer: I tend to play a bit
harder... sometimes bouncey, because I love to have a
laugh... but for the most part it's aggressive and
relentless. Or at least, that's what I'm told!
Question: Do you often find yourself
relating other things in life TO DJing?
Answer: Sure, just the other day I was
watching the window wipers and noticing how if I just
sped them up a little bit they might be on beat to the
music. ;P
Question: If you could ask
yourself one interview question what would it be?
Answer: Have you ever danced with the devil
in the pale moonlight?
Question: Name
your first 5 records you've bought! Answer:
Ack, I couldn't remember even if I tried. But lets see,
I can tell you my top five favorites:
Me &
Jack - "Viva House" Misjah & Tim - "Access"
Hardfloor - "Acperience" Attack (E.Top) -
"Ecsta-Deal" Sperminator - "No Women Allowed"
(and Tinrib/Karim Remix)
Question: What is your actual music
background? Did you take musical lessons as a child?
Learned music theory? Answer: None, absoutely
positively none! Tho I wish I had.
Question: Do you know how to scratch and
if so, how did you learn and what would you pass on to
beginners? Answer: I can do a few basic
scratches... just from playing around and practicing.
I'd say the number one rule for beginners in all things,
is Practice. Because if you don't practice everyday...
there is someone else out there who will, and they will
be better.
Question: What was the best
thing that taught you how to beatmatch?
Answer: Picking up two of the same record and
getting a feel for what it was supposed to sound like
and how to handle the vinyl.
Question: If
you produce what software/Instruments do you use ?
